When it comes to the holidays, it may be a hard time for your teeth. There are many seasonal treats that you may reach for that can harm them, but certain drinks can be just as much trouble! Many contain sugar or other ingredients that can increase your risk of cavities or stains. To help ensure your smile stays strong, here are four beverages you should keep in moderation to protect your oral health.
Wine
Wine is a staple for many to enjoy during the winter. It can help you enjoy the moment, but both red and white varieties can cause problems if you aren’t careful. This beverage is acidic, which can wear down your enamel the more you have it. You may notice sensitivity to hot and cold items as this layer becomes weakened, plus staining, as well.
Hot Chocolate
Many people choose hot chocolate as a comfortable way to warm themselves up. It can help you get into the spirit of the season, but this drink can cause staining if you overindulge. That’s because it has chromogens, which are the dark particles that get stuck in your teeth. Not only that, but it’s full of sugar (so are the marshmallows if you add any), so you may be at a higher risk of cavities.
Holiday Punch
While holiday punches are often made from fruit, they may tint your smile the more you have them. Cherries, pomegranates, blueberries are full of nutrients, but their juices are highly pigmented. The more they come in contact with your enamel, then you may risk developing discoloration. As well, many recipes call for sugary additives, such as flavored soda, which can lead to decay.
Eggnog
This may be a tradition to have during this time of year. You may prepare it in your own way, by adding alcohol, whipped cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, or any other preferences you have, but it can be the worst for your teeth if you drink it too often! The combination of sugar and dairy (plus alcohol) can feed the bacteria in your mouth, which causes cavities.
In the end, it may be nearly impossible for you to stop enjoying these holiday beverages. Thankfully, you can still have them on occasion or in moderation, but just don’t overindulge. Rinse your mouth with water after drinking them, so that you can keep your smile strong and bright for the new year ahead.
