3 Signs That You’re Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard

Did you know there’s such a thing as brushing your teeth too hard? You might find the fact somewhat surprising. Given dentists’ constant advice, many patients would think there’s no such thing as brushing too forcefully. Still, it’s true: applying too much pressure during the process can harm your oral health.

Are you wondering if the hard brushing habit applies to you? Then read on to learn its effects, its signs, and ways to be a better tooth brusher.

How Does Overbrushing Damage Your Smile?

Also known as “toothbrush abrasion,” overbrushing wears down tooth enamel and sometimes exposes your teeth’s sensitive roots. It can also cause receding gums, leading to other problems like periodontal (i.e., gum) disease and cavities. If left untreated, such conditions can require dentists to give you a filling, root canal therapy, or tooth extraction.

Signs You’re Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard

To know for sure whether you’re an over-brusher, look for the following signs:

  • Your toothbrush has worn out in less than three months: A toothbrush less than three months old should still appear relatively new. If it doesn’t — if it looks like the bristles have flared out and frayed— then you’ve probably brushed too hard.
  • Gum recession: If you brush every day and still have gum recession, you’re likely overbrushing your teeth.
  • Tooth sensitivity. Teeth with roots exposed from gum recession will be more sensitive to temperatures. In other words, having tooth pain from hot or cold foods may signal that you overbrush.

What Is the Right Way to Brush Your Teeth?

First, usea soft-bristled toothbrush that you replace every three months or so. Said bristles are less abrasive to tooth surfaces than alternatives and less likely to cause enamel damage. You could also let an electric toothbrush do the work and simply guide it over your teeth.

Next, remember to brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle to your gums to clean under the gum line.

From there, just gently brush your teeth using short, tooth-wide strokes for two minutes daily. You’re less likely to rush things and go too vigorously when you give yourself a couple minutes compared to a handful of seconds.

Don’t let your dedication to teeth cleaning lead to overbrushing. These tips will ensure you’re getting all of the good out of brushing without accidentally doing harm.
